Goals for level 1 in Finnish The student is introduced to the main characteristics of the Finnish language. He is learning to exchange simple information about himself and people or objects around him, and he is aware of ordinary Finnish communication habits and attitudes. He also acquires information about Finland and the Finns on a general level.
At the end of the first level the student will be able to:
1. Greet people and introduce himself in Finnish
2. Tell about himself and ask simple questions about people 3. Ask and tell the time, ask for prices and for help
4. Give a short, simple positive or negative opinion
5. Invite people for a coffee, lunch etc. and accept or refuse an offer
6. Give a simple description of one's office / apartment / house
7. Tell shortly about his daily and weekly program
8. Tell shortly about his holiday plans
Lexical themes on level 1:
1. Basic greetings and wishes
2. Countries, nationalities and languages
3. Prices, phone numbers, addresses
4. Simple weather expressions
5. Basic vocabulary concerning:
- family life
- house, apartment, rooms, furniture
- study, work, hobbies
- town, public buildings, shops
- means of transport
- days of the week, seasons and public holidays
Main grammar items on level 1:
1. Basic sentence types (affirmative and negative, questions and answers, "there is-sentences"
and object sentences with an uncountable direct object)
2. Cardinal numbers
3. Personal and demonstrative pronouns
4. Basic question words
5. Verb conjugation in present tense indicative
6. Introduction to the consonant change system
7. Introduction to the Finnish case system:
- function of the basic form versus the inflected form, learning the stem and some case endings
- nominative singular and plural
- partitive singular (basic rules)
- six local cases in singular (inessive, elative, illative, adessive, ablative, allative)
- a short illustration of the adessive used in simple possessive sentences
